In an effort to improve the efficiency of garbage collection in the town, the Karur Municipality has acquired two garbage compactors for the first time.

Each compactor is attached with a vehicle and used for transporting the dustbins from one place to another.

Unlike the normal garbage trucks, the compactor compresses the garbage to collect heavy loads to transport to the dumps.

Each compactor had been acquired at a cost of Rs. 35 lakh. Similarly, the Karur Municipality has acquired three tipper lorries and 100 compact bins at a cost of Rs. 95 lakh.

Transport Minister M.R. Vijayabhaskar formally launched the compactors and lorries at a function organised here on Monday in the presence of Senior Collector Kakarla Usha.

C. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner, Karur Municipality, said the garbage compactors would add value to the men and machines engaged in the solid waste management by the municipality. The compactors would reduce the time, fuel and workforce spent on collecting garbage to an extent.
