Supporters of jallikattu staged protests in several places in the central region on Wednesday demanding that the sport be conducted during Pongal festival.

Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi cadre were arrested in Thanjavur and Nagapattinam districts when they tried to stage rail and road roko.

Police said 22 party cadre were taken into custody when they assembled near the Thanjavur railway junction to block trains. Another group of 21 persons which tried to picket the Tiruvaiyar telephone exchange was also detained. In Nagapattinam, eight persons were arrested when they tried to stage rail rook.

In Tiruchi, supporters of jallikattu blocked roads at Uthamarseeli, Somarasampet and Samayapuram areas.

Police said around 75 resident of Uthamarseeli resorted to road roko for a while. One of them tried to immolate himself. However, police thwarted the attempt and pacified the protestors. At Samayapuram, a group of 50 villagers took out a rally along with nine bulls from Santhaigate to Marudhur.
