About 180 disabled persons from Tiruchi district were screened and assessed of their requirements for supply of free assistive devices here on Tuesday.
The camp was organised jointly by the Department of Disabled Rehabilitation and the LANCO Foundation, a non-governmental organisation which supplies the assistive devices, at the Collectorate here. This is the fourth such assessment camp being held in the district over the past two years and already hundreds of disabled persons have been provided with free assistive devices through government and voluntary agencies.
On Tuesday, an orthopaedician from the K.A.P.Viswantham Government Medical College and a team of technicians from the LANCO Foundation assessed the requirements of the disabled persons who had turned up for the camp. T.Soundiah, collector, inaugurated the camp and inspected the assessment process.

Apart from identifying the nature of assistive devices required by the beneficiaries, measurements were also taken so that the devices could be fabricated to suit the individual requirements.
About 54 pairs of crutches, 34 wheel chairs, 30 tri-cycles, 12 surgical shoes, nine above-knee prosthesis, 12 below-knee prosthesis, 18 splints, and 10 callipers are to be supplied to the beneficiaries, according to R.Shyamala, District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer. The devices would be supplied to the beneficiaries by the first week of January after fabrication, she added.
