Ever since the Chinthamani Cooperative Super Markets at Puthur and Teppakulam in the city were given a facelift last year, business at these two outlets has shot up significantly.

Showcasing around 4,500 varieties of consumer products -all under one roof- for sale, the “Chinthamani Malls” with self-service sections at these two places have begun to woo customers owing to competitive prices of goods besides other features.

The Chinthamani Super Market at Puthur was refurbished in March last year to bring it on a par with private upmarket departmental store and came to be known as “Chinthamani Mall”.

The sale of products which was Rs. 4.61 lakh in March 2009 has been on the rise since then, touching Rs. 24.72 lakh and Rs 26.06 lakh in January and February 2010 respectively.

The sale recorded during the period April 2009 to February 2010 in the current fiscal has already surpassed Rs. 2 crore, which is almost seven times more than what was registered from April 2008 to February 2009. The sale during April 2008 to February 2009 was Rs. 33.97 lakh.

Similar is the case with regard to the Teppakulam Chinthamani Mall which was modernised in July 2009. The sale recorded from July 2009 to February 2010 was Rs. 75.23 lakh; while it was only Rs. 13.71 lakh from July 2008 to February 2009.

Official sources say goods at Chinthamani Malls were being sold at less than MRP and free door delivery facility was being offered for purchases exceeding Rs. 1,000.

This apart, 10 per cent reduction from the MRP rate was being given for all medicines without levying tax.

The sources said commercial gas cylinders were also available at the Chinthamani Malls which work on Sundays in the first fortnight of every month.
