The Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations has appealed to the Tiruchi Corporation to develop and strengthen some of the underutilised roads in the city under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP) to be implemented soon.
The federation, at its core committee meeting held here recently with M.Sekaran, convenor in the chair, adopted a resolution pointing out that the 80-feet road on the west end of Thillai Nagar has long remained underutilised. If this road could be linked to the Thennur Highway and Salai Road, the traffic congestion on the Thillai Nagar Main Road would reduce considerably.
The Corporation should also explore the feasibility of connecting the East Boulevard Road with the Thanjavur Road without having to go along the Fish Market behind the Gandhi Market. The Thanjavur Road should also be widened as planned.

Pedestrian underpasses should be built across the Palakkarai, Thennur and Srirangam railway level crossings as they were facing much difficulty now in going over the bridge to reach the other side.
Similarly, subways should be built at important traffic intersections in the city such as the Head Post Office Junction, Puthur Four Roads Junction, the MGR Statue Junction in Cantonment and Mainguard Gate. Efforts should be made to increase the green cover in the city in wake of cutting down of trees for various projects, the resolution said.
Through other resolutions the federation demanded the lifting of load shedding for domestic consumers and appealed to the Railways to provide chair cars in the Cholan Express or stop collecting berth charges from passengers as it was a day train.
