The six-day English language training conducted by the British Council for block resource teachers (BRT) from the districts of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam commenced on Monday at the Tiruchi District Social Service Society.

A total of 77 BRTs are undergoing the training in two batches, under the aegis of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA). The training is meant to enhance the English teaching skills of upper primary teachers.

The second phase of training for a similar number of teachers drawn from the four districts would be conducted on the premises of the Tamil Nadu Laity Commission at Pirattiyur from October 13 to 18.

The mandate of the BRTs is to transfer the benefit of the training programme to upper primary teachers by holding sessions at the block-level. Last year, the British Council imparted training to BRTs for the benefit of primary teachers.

The training has resulted in a conscious attempt on the part of both teachers and students to interact in English, according to the Additional Chief Educational Officer – SSA, L.Augustine Peter Fathima.

The impact could be felt in the teaching-learning process, she said.
