The annual Young Student Scientists Programme (YSSP), organised by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, got off to a start at St. Joseph’s College on Friday with about 80 schoolchildren from Tiruchi and Karur districts selected to undergo the programme.
Top performers in standard XI from schools in Tiruchi and Karur districts will be spending the next 15 days exploring research avenues in the college’s laboratories under the guidance of experienced teachers of the college. Students will be studying and experimenting on subjects such as physics, chemistry, botany, computer science and mathematics. Conceptualised to draw students to the learning of science subjects and pursue research, the YSSP encourages students to be inquisitive.
Yoga, sports, English language and special lecture sessions would form part of the programme. Field visits and a science exhibition would form part of the event. The group of students would come back for exposure study for the second year next summer.

The programme was inaugurated by Chief Government Whip R.Manoharan in the presence of F.Andrew, Principal, I.K.Lenin Tamil Kovan, Project Director (in-charge), Anna Science Centre Planetarium, and S.Aruldas, Director, Shepherd Extension Department, St.Joseph’s College.
