33 injured in jallikattu

Thirty three persons, mostly spectators, were injured in a jallikattu held at Arungal near Keezha Palur on Monday.

According to sources, two of them who sustained severe injuries have been admitted to the Government Hospital in Ariyalur. They sustained multiple injuries as they were gored by the bulls. However, they were stated to be out of danger. The remaining 31 persons were treated at the special camp held at Arungal.

The event drew a huge crowd from different villages of Ariyalur, Thanjavur and Tiruchi districts. More than 10,000 people witnessed the event. About 200 bulls belonging to Ariyalur, Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts were released from the vadivasal.

Meanwhile, Keezha Palur police have registered a case against 10 persons for conducting the event without obtaining permission from the authorities. The organisers were charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to the Animals Act.
