25 injured in jallikattu

Youth attempting to tame a bull during jallikattu at Lalgudi near in Tiruchi.

Twenty five persons sustained injuries in the jallikattu held at L. Abishekapuram in Lalgudi taluk on Sunday. Over 440 bulls and 580 tamers were permitted to take part in the event that lasted a little over seven hours.

Collector K. S. Palanisamy and Superintendent of Police T. Senthil Kumar monitored the event to ensure that the guidelines were adhered to. Bulls from Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, Salem, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, and Karur districts took part in the traditional sport.

Official sources said all bulls were examined by veterinary teams deployed at the spot.

Five animals were barred from taking part post examination. The tamers were allowed on the arena only after the medical teams examined them.

Seven tamers were disqualified for non-adherence to rules, the sources further said. The event started at around 10 a.m. with bulls being sent through the ‘Vaadi Vaasal’ one after the other.

Police sources said 25 persons sustained injuries which included 12 tamers. Six of the injured were referred to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi and to the Government Hospital at Lalgudi. The remaining injured persons were treated as out-patients at the spot by the medical teams.
