21 super speciality posts filled up in Tiruchi GH

The K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, Tiruchi, has filled up 21 super speciality posts, including eight professors, for various departments.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, G. Anitha, Dean of the college, said the posts were recently sanctioned by the State government to offer speciality treatments to patients.

New posts were sanctioned for the departments of neurology, gastroenterology, cardiothoracic, surgical oncology, medical oncology, nephrology and neo-natology. Barring one or two, most of the specialists had already reported for duty.

With the latest additions, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, which was attached with the medical college, would be able to provide super speciality treatment to the patients of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karur. Highly critical and expensive surgeries, including cancer, could be done at the hospital with free of cost.

“Creation of new specialist posts is a boon to the general public of the region. With the appointment of specialists, all six floors of the trauma care building and the available infrastructure will be fully used. Moreover, we are in a better position to perform rare and highly complicated surgeries,” Dr. Anitha said.

With 21 specialists, she said the number of faculty members of the hospital had gone up to 221. Similarly, the number of beds in the hospital also had gone up to 1,598 with the addition of 400 beds in Reproductive Maternal Healthcare Building, which was inaugurated a few months ago.

Equipment acquired

The Dean said the hospital had also acquired various equipment to the tune of ₹4.5 crore including a 16-slice CT scan. There were 14 operation theatres in the hospital. All of them were upgraded with hydraulic operation tables. Anaesthesia work station, portable x-rays, ventilators and cell counters were among the new equipment. They were all purchased by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC). Six technicians were appointed for manning CT scan and other equipments.

She said the average occupancy rate of in-patient wards hovered around 95%, which was more than the Medical Council of India (MCI) norms. The hospital was getting about 3,000 outpatients daily. Efforts were being taken for optimum use of the Reproductive Maternal Healthcare unit.
