About 2.5 lakh families in Tiruchi district have been photographed so far for issue of smart cards under the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for live saving treatments, according to Collector T. Soundiah.
The photographing exercise has been completed so far in five blocks in the district and currently it is underway at the Manapparai block. About 2 lakh more families have to be photographed in the district, he said inaugurating a workshop on implementation of the scheme organised for the benefit of government doctors, health officials and field workers here on Tuesday.
Twenty-seven hospitals have been recognised in the district for carrying out free surgeries/treatment for the beneficiaries of the scheme. He appealed to the Health Department officials and doctors of the Primary Health Centres and hospitals to provide proper guidance to the people on how to avail the scheme.

He urged the officials to help the district administration to put the district on top in the implementation of the scheme.
The advisor of the Tamil Nadu Health System Project, M. Kamatchi said that 458 hospitals in the State have been recognised to provide treatment to beneficiaries under the project. So far about 7,000 persons have undergone surgeries. The State government has targeted to extend life saving treatments to one lakh persons a year under the project, he said.
