19 injured in jallikattu near Tiruchi

Nineteen persons were injured in a ‘jallikattu’ held at Therkku Irungalur near Samayapuram on Saturday.

Lasting four hours, the event which was held in an open area witnessed the participation of around 250 bulls from Tiruchi and other places.

Police sources said the event was held after the Collector accorded permission. Around 300 police officers men from Tiruchi, Karur, Pudukottai and Ariyalur districts were deployed for bandobust duty.

Barricades to a distance of 150 metres were erected at the venue to prevent spectators from going beyond the barricades and the entire event was videographed, police sources said.

The event was held under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi S. Nizamuddin, revenue officials; those from the Animal Husbandry Department and a representative from the Animal Welfare Board.

Four ambulances were stationed at the venue where two doctors and a team of para-medical staff were present to attend to the injured. A fire tender was also stationed at the spot. The sources said 16 sustained simple injuries, while three of them were admitted as in-patients at the Government Hospital in the city and in a private hospital.
