‘Alpha’ teams formed to check crime in the city

Amid recurring instances of property crimes of different types getting reported here, the City Police has revived the motorcycle patrolling teams in an effort to check offences.

Codenamed “Alpha”, the bike patrolling teams has been constituted in each one of the 14 police stations falling within the jurisdiction of Tiruchi City. The arrangement has been put in place on the order of the Commissioner of Police A. Arun.

In all, 17 “Alpha” teams have been formed with Srirangam, K. K. Nagar and Woraiyur police stations provided with one additional team as the areas falling under these stations were larger than the others.

Every “Alpha” team would comprise of one police constable and another constable drawn from the Armed Reserve strength.

Each team would be provided with a government motorcycle and equipped with a walkie-talkie set for faster communication.

The “Alpha” teams have been assigned the task of preventing chain snatching, burglaries, attention diversion and pocket picking.

The team members would be armed with photographs of criminals involved in such offences. The teams would patrol their respective police station areas and note down details of locked houses so as to accord special attention during night, a police press release said.

The teams would also carry out vehicle checks in their respective areas and verify the records of two-wheeler riders to ensure their genuineness.

They would work round-the-clock in “A” and “B” shifts starting from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., the release further said.

The local police constables forming part of the “Alpha” teams would work under the control of the respective Inspector of Police (Crime).

The Assistant Commissioners of Police (Crime) would review their work on a day-to-day basis. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) would supervise the overall performance of these teams regularly, the release added.
