A Rs.120-crore plant for shredding different class of used motor vehicles and miscellaneous goods to add value to recycled scrap will come up in the city.

The shredding plant, to come up in six hectares of land, will enable the government to remove vehicles involved in road accidents and abkari cases and dumped on the premises of police stations, government buildings, and carriageways, creating eyesore and nuisance, Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson said.

He was launching a road safety programme of the Ananthapuri FM station of All India Radio (AIR) here on Tuesday.

A shredder is a machine that tears large scrap into smaller portions of high density that are free from rust, dust, and colour contents. A car shedder can transform a car into small pieces within minutes. Till now, the State had only plastic shedders to tackle the increasing plastic menace.

Mr. Thomson said the vehicle shredding unit would be the first of its kind in the country.

The drive to remove vehicles that had rusted and become junk had begun with the shifting of 600 motor vehicles to Attipra on Monday, he said. Mr. Thomson hinted at taking a decision to ban vehicles more than 15 years old from the road as done recently in Delhi. This would decongest the roads and get rid of old vehicles.
