Make the most of RTI Act: Aruna Roy

Social activist Aruna Roy has called for greater reliance on the Right to Information (RTI) Act as a potent tool to reveal misgovernance and to make people aware of their rights.

Participating in a workshop organised by the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI) here on Saturday, Ms. Roy said the need of the hour was to make the common man aware of the potency of the weapon. “If activists tagged sarcastically as seven-star react, nothing happens, but when common people react, their integrity will add force to their action,” she said. She said eliciting information from panchayats could be the first step towards seeking details from the State and Central governments. Officers who refuse to disclose information about corruption and misgovernance were committing a crime worse than corruption itself and their action amounted to betrayal. — Special Correspondent
