A tense situation prevailed briefly in front of University College here on Tuesday when activists of the Mahila Congress arrived to form a human chain to express solidarity with the cause of women the world over.

A short while later, some Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) activists arrived on the scene shouting slogans in support of the human chain and in support of the Mahila Congress.

This triggered a response from Students Federation of India activists in the college who also gathered in numbers near the college gate.

The wall of police between the two groups prevented anything untoward from happening. Sometime later, the KSU activists were arrested and removed from the scene.

Though these incidents relegated the programme of the Mahila Congress to the backburner, they did form a human chain after the incident.
