Within a week, motorists can walk into the swanky Regional Transport Office (RTO) that has a reception, e-seva kendra, latest queue management system, quick over-the-counter service, and is decked out with designed furniture, water fountain and other citizen-friendly facilities.
Housed on the 5th floor of the 12-storey bus terminal complex of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) at Thampanoor, the 9,000 sq ft new fully air conditioned state-of-the-art office is to emerge as a trendsetter for government offices and for the services to the citizens.
Separate sections for executive and ministerial staff, designated areas for despatch and accounts section, adequate storage space to keep registers and files, and potted plants make the office unique.

At the 50-seat conference hall, road safety awareness classes can be conducted for fresh driving licence holders.
Separate lounges have been provided for making use of services under the Transport Mission Mode Project’s flagship uniform pan-India applications Sarathi for driving licence, Vahan - the Web application developed for vehicle registration, for those undertaking computer-aided learners test, and for those stepping into see the RTO and Joint RTO.

With the switchover to Vahan, multiple visits to the offices of the MVD and paperwork will come down. All vehicle records and driving licence records have been integrated by NIC into the repository.
The shifting of the RTO office is part of the government initiative to save the ₹65-crore complex and help the Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation (KTDFC) realise the money invested for building.
“The hi-tech office with the latest queue management systems will be a model RTO office for the whole country. The public will have maximum convenience and facilities. It is modelled on the lines of the Traffic office in Dubai,” Transport Commissioner K. Padmakumar told The Hindu on Saturday.
Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society Ltd (ULCCS) has done the interiors.
The formal commissioning will take place on February 27.
The 100-odd personnel, working in the office of the RTO, Thiruvananthapuram now at Transport Bhavan, Fort, have been given training in the Vahan software to be launched for the first time in the State, Joint Transport Commissioner and Secretary, STA, Rajeev Puthalath, said.
