Student’s death: police probe soon

May 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Much remains to be revealed about the death of Gudisa Surekha, the 20-year-old B.Tech Avionics student of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Valiyamala, whose body was found floating off the Thumba coast, here, on Saturday.

While her body, embalmed after autopsy at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital here on Sunday, was taken by her relatives to their hometown in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, the Thumba police say they still do not have a clear picture on how Surekha ended up where she was found.

According to R. Jayasanil, Sub Inspector, Thumba, relatives who reached here early this morning had told the police that she had not given any indication of being under stress or being depressed in her recent phone calls.

Unclear leads

As of now, the only reason for the death, if it was a suicide as is being assumed, was the impact of ‘not so encouraging’ results of the second semester that she received on Friday. Even then, how she reached the coast was yet to be known. There were reports that she had left the hostel around 4.30 p.m. Details of these were yet vague.

The college authorities said they had reported her missing to the Valiyamala police when she did not turn up by 8 p.m. at the hostel.

However, the Thumba police would begin an investigation that led to the death of the girl only from this week.

How Surekha reached the coast and whether there were any witnesses would be investigated, while statements from her hostel-mates too would be recorded to find whether there could be any other angles to the death. The statements would be recorded from Tuesday onwards, he added.

The body of Surekha was found floating on the sea off Thumba around 8.45 a.m. on Saturday, more than 12 hours after the college authorities reported her missing.

There were no external injuries noted in the inquest while the autopsy report is expected in a couple of days.
