Governor and former Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam has stressed the need for lawyers to constantly update themselves on the evolving scenario in the legal system.

He was delivering the inaugural address at the 12th All India Moot Court Competition for Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Ever-rolling Trophy at the Government Law College on Thursday.

Mr. Sathasivam said a lawyer should not limit his knowledge to text books alone, but update oneself with the interpretations of legal propositions, amendments and other aspects. For this, reading legal journals, law reports, articles, research papers and other related materials is necessary. Lawyers should also be adept in the new technologies that assist in fast sharing of information, he pointed out.

According to him, the hallmarks of good legal writing, whether at the trial or appellate level, were sound analysis, clarity and persuasiveness. He exhorted law students to maintain academic excellence by participating in seminars, conferences, discussions and academic interactions in order to achieve professional heights. Excellent communication skills were also necessary for the purpose.
