SHRC directive to ensure piped water connection

May 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 12, 2016 08:04 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the District Collector to intervene in providing piped water connection to around 20 households near Santhivila Government Hospital at Nemom.

In November last year, the Kerala Water Authority had initiated works to lay pipeline using Rs.14 lakh sanctioned from the MLA’s constituency development fund. An individual who wanted to construct a building in the area opposed laying of the pipeline. Residents of the locality had approached the court and obtained a stay on the construction of the building.

Acting on a complaint filed by the residents, SHRC chairman J.B. Koshy said the Additional District Magistrate objected to pipeline laying citing a stay order. Mr. Koshy in his order said there was no bar on laying the pipeline and urged the Collector to immediately intervene in the issue.
