Self-financing engg. colleges fare poorly in KTU exam

Students in engineering colleges in the private self-financing sector have fared poorly — when compared to their counterparts in the government and aided sector — in the results of the first semester examinations of the A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU). The results were published in February one month after the completion of the examinations.

“The results clearly show that wherever the intake of students has been on the basis of quality, the results have also been very good. On the whole, government and aided engineering colleges have fared well. However, there are colleges in the private sector too that have returned good results,” the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the KTU M. Abdul Rahman told The Hindu .

The College of Engineering — still the primary choice of top rankers in the engineering entrance examination — tops the list of colleges in terms of marks scored for each subject and in the average pass percentage.

The pass percentage of CET is 95.83. The corresponding figure for the college that has fared the worst is 44.84. In two private self-financing engineering colleges, no student has passed all the examinations.

The second best performance has been returned by students of the Government Engineering College, Thrissur, where the average pass percentage is 93.21.

The third place goes to the Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science where the average pass percentage is 92.6. The Sri Chithra Thirunal College of Engineering, Pappanamcode, has posted an average pass percentage of 89.51 and the Barton Hill Engineering College has notched up an average pass percentage of 88.56.

While the SCMS School of Engineering and Technology has an average pass percentage of 86.53, the Mar Baselios College of Engineering has posted a pass percentage of 85.93.

Course-wise performance

Course-wise the highest pass percentage has been for the newly introduced subject, ‘Introduction to Sustainable Engineering’— 91.44.

The lowest pass percentage was for the subject ‘Introduction to Electrical Engineering’— 51.09 per cent. Engineering Graphics too proved to be a tough subject with a pass percentage of only 51.62. The total pass percentage for all the courses is 66.15 per cent.

The evaluation of about 2.3 lakh answer scripts was done at 10 centralised camps (government and aided engineering colleges) across the State. The valuation was semi-automated with answer scripts sporting bar codes instead of register numbers.
