Government should come up with scientific solutions for every region in the State that faces the problem of waste management, Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan has said. He was speaking at a mass convention on City Protection organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation here on Saturday.
“There is no use fighting over the issue and blaming each other for the present situation that the State is facing. The government is coming with various waste treatment plants such as the one in Chalai market. Let us hope that such measures will help solve the problem,” Mr. Achuthanandan said.
He said that protest from the people could not be neglected. The way forward was to come up with separate treatment plants in those regions where waste disposal was a major concern, he added.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly G. Karthikeyan inaugurated the convention that was aimed at creating awareness among public of the need for promoting and taking up decentralised waste management projects.

“Waste management and disposal is not the sole responsibility of the government or the Corporation. Each one of us should take the responsibility to manage the waste in our own houses. The role played by various agencies is important, but they need to be supported by the public. Let’s take a promise that we will not use plastic bags in our houses,” said the Speaker.

After the inauguration, actor and ambassador of the cleanliness drive Suresh Gopi administered the oath on taking up decentralised waste management and minimal use of plastic to the public.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader O. Rajagopal; MLAs V. Sivankutty and K. Muraleedharan; former Ministers M. Vijayakumar, C. Divakaran, and V. Surendran Pillai; poet Sugathakumari; district leaders of various political parties; cultural personalities; ward councillors; and Kudumbashree workers attended the convention.
