The Health Wing of the city Corporation temporarily closed down a restaurant on Sunday evening, after a worm was found in a biriyani parcel from there. According to health officials, they had got a complaint over whatsapp from a city resident with images of the worm in the biriyani, ordered through an online food ordering platform, from Lamiya restaurant located in Kowdiar.
The officials conducted a raid in the evening, soon after the complaint was received. The remaining portion of biriyani was seized and destroyed. They found stale chicken stored in unhygienic conditions in an open container under a wash basin.
“We cannot be sure whether the worm was from the chicken used in the biriyani or from the plantain leaf used to wrap it. The biriyani itself was found to be fresh, but it was seized since the worm was found in it. The kitchen was also found to be functioning from a limited space,”said Health Inspector S.S.Minu, who led the raid.

Waste dumping
The Health Wing has also decided to impose a fine of ₹10,000 on a civil service aspirant, who was caught while trying to dump waste materials filled in a sack into the canal near Marappalam on Saturday night, around 9.30 p.m. The person, staying in a rented apartment in Nanthencode, had brought the waste-filled sack on a motorcycle.
According to health wing officials, the sack contained waste materials including several plastic and polypropylene carry bags used to wrap food items by online food ordering platforms.

“These carrybags have become a huge problem for us. Though the Corporation had organised a meeting with officials of these online platforms a few months back, they have not brought about any change in the method of packing. Their excuse is that there is no other way they can pack all the curries,” said an official.
