The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Thiruvananthapuram, has come up with a new application which enables the visually impaired to read from newspaper websites.
Named ‘Varthamozhy’, the voice enabled application would help the visually impaired to ‘read’ newspapers. All that the visually impaired needs do is to say the name of the newspaper and a synthesized voice will read it out for them. The user can also choose to read the contents under a particular headline or a specific page of the newspaper.
The application enables users to select the newspapers of their choice. The users can also save the file and ‘read’ them later. The news is updated in real time as is done by the newspapers.

N.T. Nair, chief editor, Executive Knowledge Lines, released the application at a seminar organized by C-DAC as part of its three-day technology exposition here on Thursday.
Another new device developed by C-DAC, on display at the exposition, is a watch which acts like a security device. “This GPS enabled device can alert the person’s relatives or police officials who can track the person wearing it,” C-DAC officials said.
The C-DAC has also introduced two mobile telemedicine units named ‘Sanjeevani’ and ‘Sunayna’, the first having equipment for detection of lifestyle diseases and cervical cancer, and the latter an advanced eye care unit which detects glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
