District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram City) P. Prakash has said that the police have adopted various measures to rein in substance abuse and drug proliferation. He added that the success of such efforts hinged on the support of voluntary organisations. He was inaugurating an awareness programme organised by the ‘Vallakkadavu Ente Naadu,’ a new media collective at Vallakkadavu, on Friday.
Mr. Prakash said the drug lobby was not just suppliers of narcotics, but was also the force behind a parallel economy. Their activities were a threat to peace in society. Such factors prompted the police to book such persons under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA), he said.
He cautioned the youth against being addicted to narcotic substances which destroyed their resourcefulness and created a sense of insecurity in them. The City police had taken a pro-active stance against substance abuse. Voluntary organisations and residents associations had a vital role in complementing these efforts.
