Says common elements in syllabi will solve equivalency issues

Higher Education Minister K.T. Jaleel has directed the State universities to prepare 25-year perspective plans and evolve a common syllabus for similar courses .

Convening the second meeting of Vice Chancellors of the varsities under his department at the University of Kerala here on Friday, Dr. Jaleel mooted the idea of ensuring common elements in the syllabi to overcome the difficulties in establishing equivalency of degrees.

The Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) will undertake preparatory steps, including organising workshops during April and May. Besides, the universities must take the lead in revising the syllabi of postgraduate courses offered by study departments in a time-bound manner, the Minister said.

Dr. Jaleel came down heavily on the Vice Chancellors for the failure of the universities in complying with the decisions adopted at the previous meeting in September. There had not been much progress in expediting issuance of degree certificates and ensuring that information relating to examination schedule and other details were provided online in a timely manner.

Besides, other proposals including the creation of a Startup project bank for students and extension programmes as well as reservation for SC/ST candidates in research were yet to be implemented.

He directed the Vice Chancellors to initiate steps to establish an online portal for students’ grievance cells and set a deadline of six months to develop online systems for issuing certificates and accepting applications.
