Focus on city wards bordering panchayats following complaints of falling strength in govt schools

The city Corporation will conduct this year’s Pravesanotsavam at the Vazhamuttam Government High School on June 1.

The celebrations marking school reopening is usually held at a school in the city, but in a departure this year, the civic body has decided to conduct Pravesanotsavam in a Corporation ward bordering a panchayat, Corporation Education standing committee chairperson S. Unnikrishnan said.

There were complaints that in places away from the city, children mostly studied in private schools and the strength in government schools was falling, and the panchayats were not doing enough to correct the situation. The Corporation, therefore, decided to focus on wards bordering panchayats this year, he said.

Mayor V.K. Prasanth will inaugurate the Pravesanotsavam at the Vazhamuttam school at 9 a.m. on June 1.

The civic body, he said, had decided to extend remedial classes, offered to higher secondary students faring poorly in academics, to students of Class 10 too from this academic year.

It has also been decided to focus on improving students’ Hindi skills. A programme to teach Hindi to students from Classes 5 to 10 at least twice a week after school and on holidays is under consideration. The programme will be undertaken in association with the Kerala Hindi Prachar Sabha.

Hindi classes

Along with this, the Corporation also plans Hindi classes for those in the 15-55 age group to enable them to communicate better in the language. The target group includes all those who need to communicate in Hindi such as traders and Kudumbasree members. One centre would cover three to four wards.

The Corporation would also distribute sports equipment to students, besides setting up a sports team of those in the 15-35 age group to provide a fillip to sports.
