Prank call to police control room: two held in Thiruvananthapuram

October 31, 2014 11:31 am | Updated May 23, 2016 04:50 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Two men who made a hoax call to the city police control room in order to play a prank on two persons with whom they had a drunk brawl were arrested by the Karamana police here on Thursday.

The police said the brawl began when Manoj, 26, and Mujeeb, 36, were caught red-handed stealing money from two persons sitting next to them in a bar around 5 p.m. on October 20. The duo managed to get out of the bar after the quarrel without injuries but then decided to take revenge by playing a prank on the others. They noted down the registration number of the autorickshaw in which the other two left the bar and then called up the control room and said that two persons who snatched a gold chain from a woman at Pappanamcode were travelling in that autorickshaw.

The control room immediately passed on the message via wireless to all police stations, following which a massive hunt was launched. According to the police, the hunt wound up only after the autorickshaw was traced and the two persons were taken into custody. However, the truth was revealed on questioning them, after which the police began to look for the two who had made the prank call. That search took nearly a week and on Thursday, the two were finally nabbed by C. Mohanan, sub inspector, Karamana and civil police officer Jeeth Kumar. The duo had several cases registered against them in the Fort and Nemom police stations, mostly in connection with drunk brawls in city bars and near Beverages Corporation outlets, the police said.
