As part of its efforts in bringing down the number of road accidents, the State police will soon organise awareness programmes for drivers across the State.

A direction in this regard has been issued by the State Police Chief T.P. Senkumar to the District Police Chiefs and the Traffic Police.

In his order, Mr. Senkumar said most accidents involving families mostly occurred during the late hours. The lack of visibility and fatigue were the prime causes behind such incidents.

He observed that there were several instances in which persons have met with accidents after having seen off their relatives of friends at airports.

Vehicles driven by those who were not adept at night driving were commonly involved in such mishaps. Such incidents could be avoided only with the support of the public.

Accidents caused when drivers doze off due to fatigue can be prevented by the driver ensuring sufficient rest after safely parking the vehicle. Drivers must also make it a point to dip the headlights of their vehicle whenever they followed or passed by another vehicle in the opposite direction.

Mr. Senkumar also called upon the public to refrain from drunken driving and ensure strict adherence to the road safety rules. Over-speeding must be also avoided by the drivers. He added that the support of the Transport Department and other government departments would be sought for the efforts made by the police.
