The city Corporation’s plans to install aerobic bins at the vast dump behind the Palayam market met with opposition from the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) on Tuesday.
The TRIDA opposition was on the grounds that the land in question has been set aside for its own projects.
As part of its My City, Beautiful City project, the civic body has been installing aerobic bins in different areas in the city. The area behind the Palayam market was one of the identified areas due to the volume of waste produced here.

“When we went there in the afternoon, TRIDA chairman P.K. Venugopal stopped us from doing the preliminary work on setting up the aerobic bins. The earlier plan was to build a new block in the area to rehabilitate a few traders from the Palayam market. The Corporation had written to TRIDA about the plan a few years ago, when the current council took charge. But there has been no action from their side. Now, when we were about to go ahead with our plans, they have suddenly opposed it,” said Palayam Rajan, chairperson of the Welfare Standing Committee.
He said that the Corporation had also written to TRIDA around three weeks ago, asking for permission to use the land to set up aerobic bins. But with no response coming forth, they decided to go ahead. “TRIDA should think beyond just building shopping complexes and see how they can solve other issues faced by the city residents too,” Mr. Rajan said.
Mr. Venugopal said he would reserve his comments till Wednesday, as a meeting had been scheduled with the Corporation over the issue.
