The Rs. 22-lakh centre is coming up on the land owned by Neyyattinkara municipality at Athiyannoor

Senior citizens in Neyyattinkara can look forward to spend time together in a congenial place soon.

Pakal Veedu, a recreation centre conceived by the Neyyattinkara municipality two years ago, will become a reality soon with work on the building progressing fast.

Municipal chairman S.S Jayakumar said more than 60 per cent of the work had been completed. The Rs. 22-lakh centre was coming up on land owned by the municipality at Athiyannoor. The centre could accommodate 100 people. The plan is to provide a place for senior citizens to relax, with newspapers, magazines, a television set and facilities to play indoor games.

The civic body plans to deploy a vehicle to transport the senior citizens to the centre and back.

“We want to give a homely atmosphere to them. We are planning to provide even food for them,” Mr Jayakumar said.

With the availability of one more doctor, door-to-door visits by doctors and paramedical staff to carry out medical check-ups for senior citizens under the Vyomithram scheme would be conducted on more days. Currently, the team pays the visits twice a month in the 44 municipal wards, an official said. Free medicines were provided to the poor.
