The first combing drive carried out in the State capital as part of ‘Operation Suraksha,’ the State-wide effort to tackle crime, saw over 400 arrests on Wednesday.
H. Venkatesh, City Police Commissioner, said 204 arrests were recorded in the city limits. These included those of Edwin John, 29, of Pallithura, an accused in eight cases including murder, apart from the arrests of men wanted for crimes such as rape, harassment of women, and atrocities against children.
These included Benzer of Vallakkadavu; Seythali of Iranimuttom; Nazeer of Vizhinjam; and ‘Kolla’ Rajesh and Shyam, alias Jolly, both of Kadakampally. Seven persons wanted in assault cases and 177 persons, against whom warrants were issued earlier, too were arrested, Mr. Venkatesh said.

A case as per provisions of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against Suresh, alias Shukran Suresh. K. Shaheen Ahmed, Superintendent of Police, Thiruvananthapuram Rural, said the drive in the rural limits of the district saw many absconders, including Riju, alias Aryanadu Shyam, 39, an accused in several fake currency, assault, snatching, and theft cases, being nabbed.
Another 166 persons, against whom arrest warrants were issued earlier, were also arrested.
The public could contact the Rural police for complaints against land mafia, hired criminal gangs, and other criminals involved in assault, illegal moneylending, sand smuggling, Abkari cases, and drug deals, Mr. Ahmed said.
