The new emergency ward at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology here and various development activities at the hospital will be inaugurated on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju will inaugurate the new ward constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. The ward will accommodate examination rooms, an emergency theatre, duty rooms, a laboratory and classrooms for the B.Sc. Optometry course.

Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar will inaugurate the second stage of construction of a specialty block and installation of modern surgical equipment. The estimate for the development of this block is Rs.18 crore, according to a press release issued here.
The first stage of construction was completed with Rs.2.5 crore. Four floors will be built at an estimated cost of Rs.7 crore in the second phase.
HLL Lifecare’s optical pharmacy will be inaugurated by Shashi Tharoor, MP, at the function.

Medical equipment—apparatus for keyhole surgery, Vitrectomy machine for retina surgery procedure and operating microscope— have been purchased at a cost of Rs.3 crore. The hospital also has a spectacle shop and pharmacy.
On the waste disposal front, biomedical waste is being treated with the aid of Image, a firm that has been collecting hospital wastes under the auspices of the Indian Medical Association. For treating other wastes, a biogas plant has been installed with the help of the Agro-Industries Corporation. The plant set up at a cost of Rs.5 lakh will be inaugurated by Mayor K. Chandrika.
The inaugural function will be presided over by K. Muraleedharan, MLA.
