MLA: improve condition of sports school

November 23, 2014 10:51 am | Updated 10:51 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The Sports and Education Ministers should take urgent steps to better the working conditions of G.V. Raja Sports School at Mylam, V. Sivankutty, MLA, has said.

Speaking at a press conference here on Saturday, he said the neglect of the school was perplexing as much money was being spent on conducting the National Games in the State.

“The school has 370 students, including 116 girls, who are our future in sports. When I visited the school recently, I found that these students are not living in a good atmosphere which would provide them overall improvement. They are not even given fruits, milk or meat, despite norms to that effect, and are provided rice and sambhar on most days. All of the students live in the hostel and they are not even given an opportunity to contact their families. The hostel does not have adequate security and the compound is full of weeds,” Mr. Sivankutty said.

“When students fall ill, they are not taken to the hospital. There have been occasions when residents living near the hostels have taken students to the hospitals. No first-aid facility is also available in the hostel. For the past two weeks, there has been no power or water supply to the hostel,” he said.

“Though a complaint has been given to the college Principal regarding the warden’s attitude, no action has been taken,” Mr. Sivankutty said.
