Communist Party of India (Marxist) district unit secretary Kadakampally Surendran said in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday that Left Democratic Front (LDF) activists would attend the inauguration of the Onam celebrations on September 14 wearing black dress as a mark of protest against the “repressive measures adopted by the United Democratic Front (UDF) government against LDF workers who were holding agitations across the State demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.”

Addressing a press conference, he said volunteers of the LDF, led by the former District Panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan, would stage the protest at the venue, Central Stadium, in a peaceful manner without disrupting the function.

Mr. Surendran criticised the government for not registering attempt to murder charges against Sub-Inspector of Police (grade) Vijayadas, who had physically assaulted LDF worker Jayaprakash during a protest against the Chief Minister at Anayara.

The ongoing indefinite dharna by the LDF at the Martyrs’ square in protest against the "apathetic" attitude of the Union and State governments towards development of Thiruvananthapuram district had completed 72 days, he said. To mark the 90 day of the strike on September 28, the workers would block roads at 1,000 centres 10 minutes from 11 a.m., he said.
