Income Tax Officers get jail for taking bribe

Two officials attached to the Income Tax Valuation Department who were accused of demanding a bribe of Rs.1 lakh from a person in 2008 have been convicted by the Special Judge for CBI cases here.

According to an official release, CPWD Assistant Engineer R.V. Suresh Kumar and Executive Engineer R. Kennadi, who were with the IT Valuation Department in 2008, had demanded bribe from Rajendran for doing the valuation of his residence at Jagathy and for not showing exorbitant rates in the valuation reports. Rajendran lodged a complaint with the CBI following which the two officials were caught red-handed while accepting the bribe in the office of the Income Tax Valuation executive engineer in September 2008. Both were found guilty of the offence by the Special Judge for CBI cases here and were sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.50,000 each and in default, six months imprisonment for offences of criminal conspiracy, abuse of official position and demanding/accepting of bribe, according to the press release.
