The canonisation of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II at Vatican on Sunday was celebrated in two churches in the city. At the church named after Pope John Paul II in Nalanchira, Bishop Samual Mar Iranios led the special prayers.

At Shanghumughom, the prayer meeting started near the cupola, a dome-like ornate structure, in memory of Pope John Paul II.

The late Pope had visited the city in February 1986. Archbishop of Latin Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram M. Susaipakiam led the prayer meeting at Shanghumughom. A large number of devotees had gathered on the beach to celebrate the canonisation.

Rain strikes

The heavy summer rain which lashed the city in the evening wreaked havoc at the prayer meeting too. The roof of the stage on which the prayer meeting was held was blown away in the strong winds.

A few devotees sustained minor injuries when the light stands fell on them due to the winds.

The prayer meeting was later shifted to St. Peter’s Church in Kannanthura.
