An integrated municipal solid waste-to-energy plant that will look more like a covered shopping mall — that is how the government gave the hard-sell on the soon-to-come up waste treatment plant at Chala to various stakeholders at a meeting here on Wednesday.
A pamphlet given out by officials at the meeting states that the proposed plant will not let out contaminated water; will have no foul smell emanating from it; will not cause any air or sound pollution; will not require a sanitary landfill; and in effect, will remove all the accumulated garbage at Chala to ‘give attractive results’.

The pamphlet also makes it a point to say that the Chala plant will not be based on the conventional waste treatment models like the one used at Vilappilsala, and will instead deploy the thermal technology of gasification to treat up to 35 tonnes of garbage a day and produce 3.2 MW electricity as well. ‘Requires less land’ and ‘will not attract flies’ are the other points highlighted.
The plant will come up under the supervision of a firm that has set up 23 similar plants across the globe, the pamphlet notes, adding that the same technology is being used in modern waste treatment plants that will come up in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kottayam apart from the one in Thiruvananthapuram in 2013.
