The intermittent rain that lashed the city in the past few weeks has left the roads in a battered state, making commuting difficult for people. While potholes and trenches on roads caused by heavy rain plague residential areas, roads in certain coastal areas got completely washed away as a result of sea erosion.
There are reports of damage to roads from residential areas at Chakka, Pettah, Ulloor, Nalanchira, Mannanthala, Edavakkad, Chellamangalam, Manacaud, and Sreekaryam. The ward members have been asked to monitor the situation and submit the details of damaged roads in their respective areas, chairman of Standing Committee for Works V.S Padmakumar said.
The maximum damage was reported in the coastal areas of Vettukad, Vizhinjam, and Shanghumughom. Initial reports suggest that the Titanium Industrial Estate road, the stretch from the Vettukadu church to Pozhikara, and Manual Pereira Road at Kurisadi suffered extensive damage and some roads needed to be re-laid, he added.

The works wing of the Corporation had been asked to closely monitor the situation and prepare estimates for taking up re-laying and repair works. A sum of Rs.2 crore has been approved by the standing committee for carrying out repair works, he added.
The last council meeting had passed a resolution urging the State government to extend a financial assistance of Rs.10 crore for improving the condition of interior roads. Repairing roads after every rain was not possible as the funds of the civic body were insufficient, he said.
