Several trees were uprooted and power and telephone connections were cut in a few areas across the district in incessant rain on Thursday.
Five houses were partially damaged in Nedumangad. Several low-lying areas and roads were inundated as the rain continued to lash the district since Wednesday night through Thursday evening, affecting normal life across the State capital.
In the city, four trees were uprooted, three of them falling on houses, including Labour Minister Shibu Baby John’s official residence.

According to the Fire and Rescue Services personnel, a coconut palm and teak tree came crashing down on two houses at Vattiyoorkavu, causing slight damage while a Cassia fistula (Kanikonna) fell upon the Minister’s residence in the city around 11 a.m..
None were hurt in these incidents and Fire and Rescue Services personnel managed to remove the uprooted trees before noon.
A few telephone cables were broken by branches that fell on them, with telephone connections in several areas in the city being affected. These included some in Vellayambalam and surrounding areas.

Rise in water level
With water level in the Parvathy Puthanar rising, District Collector K.N. Satheesh said Irrigation officials were supervising the opening of the lake mouth in Akkulam to let water flow into the sea. No major complaint of flooding was reported from the city or the district, he said, adding that officials were monitoring the situation round the clock.
KSEB officials maintained that power supply was not disrupted anywhere in the city, while MET officials said their stations at Vellayambalam in the city and at the airport had recorded rainfall of 27.2 mm and 31.2 mm respectively till evening.
Visitors to the beach were greeted by a view of the furious sea, with high waves lashing the pier at Valiyathura.
With the rain likely to continue on Friday as well, fishermen have been advised not to put out to sea.
