A campaign by the Federation of Residents’ Associations Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) in favour of the proposed Light Metro project for the capital city got off to a start here on Wednesday, with a symbolic ‘Light Metro train’ travelling through the 19 proposed stations in the project from Karamana to Kazhakuttam.

K. Muraleedharan, MLA; Mayor K. Chandrika; TRIDA chairman P.K. Venugopal; CPI(M) district unit secretary Kadakampally Surendran; and BJP district unit secretary Karamana Jayan were present at the event.

All political parties, a FRAT release issued here said, were of the opinion that DMRC Principal Adviser E. Sreedharan should be given the reins of the project.

Mr. Muraleedharan, speaking at the launch of the campaign, said there were moves by vested interests to create confusion, which was evident from the frequent changes that were proposed — from the first idea of a monorail project, then the light metro and finally a metro rail project.

The campaign was flagged off by Ms. Chandrika and was accorded receptions at the all 19 stations, FRAT office-bearers said in the press statement.
