The Fort hospital, which has been elevated to a taluk hospital, will soon have a new building complex constructed at a cost of Rs.5 crore, Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar has said.
At a function held at the hospital to formally announce the hospital’s upgrading to the status of a taluk hospital here on Monday, he said that the first instalment of Rs.1.5 crore would be released by the National Rural Health Mission immediately so that the construction could be started.

He also inaugurated the new clinical lab at the hospital and laid stone for the new pay-ward block being constructed by the KHRWS. The proposed pay-ward block, being constructed at Rs.82.5 lakh, would have 14 rooms.
Mr. Sivakumar said that 36 new posts, including those of seven specialists, had been newly created for the hospital. He also announced that the foundation stone for the proposed new medical college in the capital would be laid on May 30. He said a development programme at Rs.50 crore would be implemented at the Government Medical College Hospital here. Instructions had been given to open fever wards wherever required, he said.
