Evaluation: varsity still in the dark

April 03, 2013 02:22 pm | Updated 02:22 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

June-2012 exam results yet to be out

Proving once again that it is yet to come to grips with conducting the examinations of the choice-based credit and semester system (CBCSS) degree courses, the University of Kerala is yet to publish the results of the second semester degree examinations — of the 2011-admission candidates — which got over in June 2012.

For sure, these students are not alone in waiting for months on end for the university to publish the results — something it is required by rules to within 41 days.

Students of the 2010 admissions who wrote their fourth semester examinations in April 2012 had to similarly wait for more than nine months to get their results published.

The fourth semester examinations of the 2010 admissions got over in April 2012. However, the centralised valuation camp for these examinations was held five months later.

Even though the results were ready by November 2012, the university could not publish the same even by February 2013.

University officials say the answer sheets of the second semester examinations have already been evaluated. “The results are almost ready and could have been published a couple of weeks ago. However, the staff were diverted for other work. We also face an acute shortage of computers,” an official associated with the CBCSS examination process told

Answer-sheet bundles

The ongoing evaluation of the fifth semester answer sheets has also led to some tension between the university and a section of teachers. These examinations were held in November 2012 but the answer sheets were sent to colleges for evaluation only in March 2013.

This time, as per the decision of the Syndicate, the papers were to be handed over to teachers to be taken home for evaluation.

Following media reports that some teachers had refused to take charge of the answer-sheet bundles insisting that they be delivered home, the All Kerala Private College Teachers Association issued a clarification that the Syndicate had already decided that the bundles would be delivered to the houses of teachers who are unable to take it home themselves. In any case, the evaluation of answer sheets is going on at a time when the sixth semester examinations are scheduled to begin in two days.

On Monday, the university announced that the valuation camps for the answer sheets of the third and first semester examinations held in December 2012 and January 2013, respectively, would begin on April 3.
