17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations conclude

The positive response from abroad to the post-flood Rebuild Kerala initiative is a reflection of how much those nations value the services of Keralites, Governor P. Sathasivam said on Thursday.

“Their love for Kerala is actually a recognition of the dedicated work done by our people in enriching the economic profile and global visibility of those nations,” he said, inaugurating the valedictory meeting of the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations organised by the the Pravasi Bharathi News Bulletin and NRI Coordination Council.

The economic and social impact of the ‘Gulf phenomenon’ is clearly evident in the progress made by the State in the last three decades, he said. On the other hand, after the recession in 2008, remittances from abroad and the number of job opportunities in foreign countries have thinned.

“Added to this, we also have to ensure the livelihood of hundreds of people who return from the Gulf countries,” he said.

He urged organisations of non-resident Keralites to initiate awareness programmes for people aspiring for jobs abroad on skill requirements and legal provisions for migrants.

Initiatives in this direction by NoRK organisations would help young job aspirants get a clear picture of what awaits them abroad, he said.

“Though there are facilities for these activities at the government level, the cooperation of people who are well aware of the conditions in other countries will increase the effect of such work,” Mr. Sathasivam said.

The greatest change brought about by the NoRK contributions was at the family level, he said. It had improved household earnings, leading to better health, education, and lifestyle. “Today, our Economic Review says that around 50 lakh people in Kerala are dependent on non-resident Malayalis,” he said.

The Central government declared January 9 as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to honour the contributions of non-resident Indians. It was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa.
