The district panchayat, through an official resolution, has demanded that the Indian Medical Association give up its plan to start a biomedical waste treatment plan at Elavupalam in Peringamala grama panchayat, which is an ecologically sensitive area.
Because of the biodiversity, the rich plant and animal life, including a wealth of medicinal plants, this area has been notified as an ecologically fragile land by the government. There is also a tribal settlement near the locality.
The plan by IMA to start a biomedical waste treatment plant has created much anxiety and apprehension amongst people and the IMA has been going ahead with its plans without conducting proper environmental impact studies or allaying the apprehensions of the public, the official resolution of the district panchayat said. Neither the Peringamala grama panchayat nor other authorities have given any permission for the proposed biomedical waste treatment plant, it said.

The district panchayat, passing the resolution, demanded that the IMA take steps to set up the proposed waste treatment pant on an alternative site. It was also decided to bring the issue to the government’s immediate attention.
The official resolution presented by district panchayat president V.K. Madhu was passed unanimously by the Thiruvananthapuram district panchayat committee.
Those who took part in the discussions included S. M. Razi, M. Jaleel, and Aanad Jayan.
