Admissions open at the new design institute of the government in Kollam.

Admissions are now open at the Kollam-based Kerala State Institute of Design (KSID). The KSID’s prospectus was released here on Wednesday by Labour Minister Shibu Baby John.

The first copy was handed over to C.S. Susanth, vice chairman of the National Institute of Design (NID) Bangalore.

The institute, which comes under the State government’s apex skill development agency, Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE), is located at Chandanathope in the outskirts of Kollam district, a press note issued here said.

It aims at creating highly skilled design professionals and producing a “Made in Kerala” brand, with part of the syllabus planned with particular attention to using the State’s natural resources, particularly in the handicrafts and handloom sectors.

Best talent

The institute aims to attract the best talent from around the country, whose options are now limited to the NIDs in Ahmedabad and Bangalore. “We aim to make this an exemplary institute nationally, and gradually, internationally,” the press note quoted the Minister as saying.

NID support

“We have received faculty and curriculum support from the prestigious NIDs, and hopefully can also look forward to an affiliation with them.” The institute offers 10 seats each for its three PG design diploma courses in Integrated Product Design, Integrated Textile and Apparel Design, and IT Integrated Communication Design, with the academic year scheduled to begin in mid-July.

The campus is set on a 31,000 sq ft campus, with fully equipped labs, a computerised library, high-speed Internet, and hostel facilities. The course, open to graduates with a minimum of 55 per cent in any discipline, is spread over 30 months and divided into five semesters, inclusive of a six-month internship.
