Congress leader injured in attack

He is under observation after emergency surgery at medical college hospital

A local leader of the Congress party at Maranalloor sustained serious injuries in an alleged attack by six assailants at his home on Thursday night.

The injured has been identified as Sajikumar, 47, general secretary of the Mandalam committee of the party. He has been working as a conductor at the Kattakkada depot of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

According to the police, the gang barged into his house at Ooruttambalam after breaking the front door around 10.30 p.m. and beat him up with iron rods. He suffered fractures on both his hands and legs. He has also suffered injuries on his genital in the attack. Sajikumar lives with his parents. At the time of the attack, both of them were at home.

One more surgery

He was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) here. According to a statement from the hospital, he was subjected to an emergency surgery and is being kept under observation in the intensive care unit. One more surgery is required, which will be carried out after an improvement in his condition.

The Maranalloor police have registered a case and launched a probe.

The police said they had not received any evidence till now on whether the attack was politically motivated.
