The former President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated the valedictory function of the centenary celebrations of the Government College of Teacher Education in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.

Mr. Kalam lauded the college, which, he recalled, had moulded over 20,000 teachers so far.

Teachers, he said, were the heart of an educational institution, who could transform students into “ignited youth that were the most powerful resource under the earth, on the earth and above the earth.”

Calling upon teachers to make classrooms creative, Mr. Kalam said it was the teacher’s duty to preserve the innocent smile that was on a child’s face when he/she came to school for the first time till they completed school education, instilling in them confidence and self-esteem and exhorting them to become employment generators rather than mere employment seekers.
