Civic bodies urged to give priority to waste projects

Civic bodies should give priority to waste management projects while amending their annual plans for the 2019-20 financial year, Suchitwa Mission Executive Director R. Ajayakumar has said.

The State government has stipulated that district, block and grama panchayats need to set aside 10% of their project allocation and municipalities and Corporation 15% of their allocation for such projects.Along with this, additional funding is provided under the Government’s Suchitwa Keralam project. Financial aid is also being provided through the Suchitwa Mission under various Central schemes.

Collection facilities

All local bodies have to build material collection facilities for the collection and segregation of non-biodegradable waste including plastic, for recycling and for use during road tarring.

Resource recovery facilities will be set up in all block panchayats and municipalities for handing over these materials to the Clean Kerala company. Till now, 489 material collection centres and 110 resource recovery facilities have been completed across the State. Such facilities will be set up in the remaining areas before the end of this financial year.

The Suchitwa Mission is giving priority for the setting up of waste treatment at source facilities since it will help in tiding over the practical difficulties of a centralised waste treatment facility.
