Case against Milma over non-availability of toned milk

October 10, 2011 10:29 am | Updated 10:29 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The Confederation of Consumer Vigilance Centre has filed a case against Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) in the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum saying that Milma is not making available toned milk (which used to be available in blue sachets), which has a fat content of three per cent, to consumers.

Milma was, at present, selling only the double toned milk, which had a fat content of 1.5 per cent, the centre said. Its general secretary Ayyappan Nair pointed out that the cow's milk that Milma was buying from dairy farmers at Rs.22.83, contained over 3.5 per cent fat.

After removing over two per cent fat from this milk, Milma was selling it at Rs.27 a litre as double toned milk, which, according to Mr. Nair, was unfair practice.

Also, despite announcing that toned milk (with three per cent fat) would be sold at Rs.28, Milma was not making this available in the market.

The district forum, having accepted the case, directed that a notice be issued to Milma representatives to appear for hearing.
